‘New technical publications Specification 1000N
announced for NATO defence projects’
Over 75 delegates from around the globe attended the
first ever user focused conference on the AECMA S1000D Technical Publications
Specification and its UK MOD equivalent Def-Stan 00-60.
“This
was long overdue, it is good to see that someone had finally taken
the initiative, shown considerable interest and managed to organise
an event that really focused the mind on the developments of S1000D”
Dennis Hoyland, Chairman of the TPSMG |
The conference was organised by Mekon Ltd, the documentation
specialist company from the United Kingdom, with an aim to bring together
delegates and organisations who will be directly affected by the growing
global popularity of the S1000D Specification across Land, Sea and Air
projects. The conference attracted high calibre speakers from within the
AECMA Community itself, Dennis Hoyland, Chairman of the TPSMG (Technical
Publications Special Maintenance Group ) spoke with great enthusiasm about
the current and future developments of the AECMA S1000D. A new major development
of S1000D was officially announced with the introduction of S1000N. A
NATO wide specification which sees US participation with representatives
from the AIA.
“The
AECMA conference was very well organised by Mekon. I found the Conference
to be well balanced and very informative, especially with regard
to ‘what is new and what is planned for the future’.
Most importantly all the Speakers were knowledgeable professionals
in their fields who presented their topics interestingly. I look
forward to future conferences and strongly recommend attendance
for any company using the Standard”.
Mike Hartley, Technical manager Sir Joseph Isherwoods |
PLCS (Product Life Cycle Support) and SCORM (Shareable
Content Object Reference Model) were key topics that were discussed in
detail and their announcement as future core omponents in the S1000D/N
arena raised a number of interesting questions that members of the TPSMG
have taken with them back to AECMA for further discussion. Items such
as IETM’s (Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals), CSDB’s
(Common Source Databases) and Viewer Technologies were discussed and
demonstrated by leading organisations from within this discipline. A comprehensive
range of market tools were displayed and each delegate had the opportunity
to spend time with leading consultants to discuss tool implementation
and usage. Simplified English was another presentation which captured
the eye of a number of delegates and immediately the audience could see
the benefits and value that employing such a standard would bring.
“This
conference would suit anyone with any level of knowledge who is
a user or is interested in using the Standard. Whether you are
wanting to further your understanding of the AECMA Standard or
find data solutions, the conference provided informative speeches
and good workshops from key people in many industries”.
Andrew Pogmore, System Administrator MBDA |
The three day conference was structured in such a way
that each delegate achieved a firm understanding of the AECMA organisation
and its future strategic developments, whilst presenting real-time experiences
from organisations such as BAe Systems and the Eurofighter Typhoon Team.
Steve Barnard, Senior Author BAe Systems, informed the delegates of his
own personal experiences and pitfalls to avoid when delivering technical
publications to S1000D for a multi -billion pound project. All delegates
had the opportunity to spend extra time with the speakers socially in
the evenings or at the allocated workshops. A gala dinner, sponsored by
Mekon, was an excellent event where a topical comedian helped to ease
the intense learning experience and was warmly received by all delegates
and presenters. Once the conference was complete it was suggested by all
delegates and TPSMG representatives that the conference become an annual
event where likeminded delegates can get together and learn about strategic
developments that will impact on their business decision making process.
“Having
serious involvement in both S1000D and DEF-STAN 00-60 both as users,
to produce deliverables to our clients, and as special application
developers, using these specifications. We found this conference
to be of high interest. We were pleased to learn of the forthcoming
inclusions in Change 10 aimed at Land and Sea based publications.
It was especially pleasing to see that many of the presenters were
the people involved in the future development and it was comforting
to know, that they had come with ‘hands-on’ experience.
We also benefited from discussion on methodology, problems encountered
and shared ideas. The location was good and it was great meeting
new people and old friends, it all resulted in a good conference”.
